A South Carolina mom is being charged in this case and her son taken in protective custody for allowing her 14 year old son to balloon up to 555lbs. Jerry Gray, the mother of the teen, of course sites the usual reasons you would likely hear, "I'm at work late", "We don't have much money" and so on...... According to her there wasn't much junk in the house, she says he got this way by eating extra meals in school and eating snacks and what not given to him by friends. Hmmmm, I don't know Ms. Gray. Seems to me he would have to be eating all darn day in school with no breaks and never attending one class in order for this to happen. Snacks from friends???? again, do these friends own Costco? how is this possible? She might be genuinely confused as to how this happened, me finding that impossible to believe is not the issue. But is she the only one to blame? If he is in fact eating seconds, thirds and fourths in school then why hasn't the school intervened?? I just don't understand?
If she is charged then this will be huge and set a precedent that can potentially open a can of worms for parents in other areas that have nothing to do with overeating. Will parents then be charged in cases where kids steal, rape, rob etc.... I mean a parent can only steer in the right direction and hope for the best, but once that child is out of your sight, is it fair to hold that parent responsible if the child makes a reckless decision?
this is a hard call..I mean..how do you control a teenagers eating...
ReplyDeleteI dont think this is so black and white...
