Lady O: From the slave house...

...to the White House! The New York Times has traced five generations of First Lady Michelle Obama's family all the way back to a former slave. The New York Times traced MichiO's (you love how I just nickname folks, right?) genealogy to a young slave girl named Melvinia Shields – Mrs. Obama's great-great-great grandmother.

Melvinia lived as a slave in South Carolina in the 1850s and was later sent to Georgia where she had a son with a white man. That child was Mrs. O's great-great grandfather. The family line eventually worked its way to Chicago and now, to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
