'Tis the season to start planning your holiday looks. Even if the recession has canceled your office party, that's no reason not to have a low-key party with friends or just party by yo' damn self.

The first place to start: your own closet. Look for a timeless piece, like your LBD, and dress it up with new trends like textured tights or bold necklaces.

If you are on the market for a new dress though, look for metallics, fabrics that shine and form-fitting frocks.

• Pick a color that suits you and make sure it's a good length for your body type.
  
• If you're petite, don't go too long.
  
• If you have spots to hide, ruching is your friend.
  
• Opaque tights are great way to take a more summery cocktail dress into winter. Pick the same color as your shoes and your legs will look longer (a great tip if you're short!).
