Witches' Brew: Will The "Oprah Curse" Haunt "Precious" Film?

Will The "Oprah Curse" Haunt "Precious" Film?

Film critics are buzzing about the upcoming film "Precious."  They say it's a gripping story, but that's not the only buzz.  Bloggers are wondering if the Oprah/Tyler Perry-induced blitz surrounding the film will lead to a backlash.

The film received a 15 minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, not long after, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry signed on as executive producers.  The film was recently snubbed at the  Gotham Awards, leading some to wonder if that backlash is already happening.

Critics say such high-profile endorsements from Oprah and Tyler could kill the film's Oscar chances.  But, some say the controversy is just among film critics who are Oprah-haters and not from actual Oscar voters.  Some critics are upset the film has gone so mainstream.  Oprah even plans to do a week's worth of "Precious"-themed shows (now, that may be overkill).  Remember how hard she pushed "Beloved" and she gave a ringing endorsement to the snoozefest that was "Australia"?  Oprah was also a producer of "The Great Debaters"... another film snubbed at the Oscars.

"Precious" opens November 6th.

So, what do you think?  Is there an Oprah curse?  What's your call?

I don't think Oprah makes movies for the money/profit aspect of it (that goes for her endorsement of a movie as well). She does projects or promotes projects that speak to her heart or have a message she thinks is worth spreading. These things may not be popular or mainstream. With that said I would not agree with the notion of there being an Oprah curse. I think her tastes and her "visions" are particular and don't appeal to everyone.

Katina-I don't know, I think that Oprah is quite an astute business woman. And while she backs things with a 'message' (not that that's good or bad) I dont for one second think she'd back something she didnt think could add to the Oprahlord coffers.

Well, if Precious is snubbed by the Oscars, it won't be Oprah's fault. The Oscars are a joke, anyway. The film is good and that's the end of it.
