Confirmed: Tyler Perry To Direct “For Colored Girls”

In typical Hollywood “lemme plug my next project before you’ve seen my current project” fashion, Tyler Perry confirmed his next project at last night’s Why Did I get Married Too? premiere. He will direct the film version of Ntozake Shange’s Broadway classic “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.”

Perry also revealed the cast, which includes Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington and Macy Gray. The film is set to begin shooting in New York this June with a likely 2010-2011 release.

“For Colored Girls” will be the first film done under Perry’s 34th Street Films production company, a new arm of Lionsgate.  The classic 1975 play dealt with issues that many black women still face today: love problems, abortion, rape, domestic abuse and abandonment.

Video director Nzingha Stewart is expected to serve as the project’s screenwriter but that title is tricky, since Perry plans to write, direct and produce the film. You know how he does.

Anyway, what say you… is this a good marriage or do you thing Tyler will mess it up?

Brew Bits: Jill Scott Talks Boobs, Bras & Lifetime Movies

Jill Scott is back! (And the church says...)

Jill popped over to the Chelsea Lately show to talk about her bra line with Ashley Stewart, her new son and her new Lifetime movie, "Sins of the Mother."  There's whole lotta "newness" going on with Miss Jilly, and I'm ready for it all.

"Sins of the Mother" airs on Lifetime, Sunday, February 21st at 8 pm (ET).  And, Jill's new album, The Light Of The Sun: Words and Sounds, Vol. 4, is due out in the Spring/Summer of this year.

And, while we're on the subject of Jill and all her newness... (geez, is this a publicity post?). Here's the full trailer for Jill's movie, "Why Did I Get Married, Too?" Tyler is Tired....

Tyler is taking a powder break. The producer wrote a note to his fans stating that after the November 1st premier of "Precious" he is planning to take a year off to deal with the raw emotions that have swelled up over his recent admission of past abuse, mostly at the hands of his father. On his website, he said he father recently reached out to him through his brother and said, "If I had beat you ass one more time you probably would have been Barack Obama!" Wow! That's gotta hurt. Will The "Oprah Curse" Haunt "Precious" Film?

Film critics are buzzing about the upcoming film "Precious."  They say it's a gripping story, but that's not the only buzz.  Bloggers are wondering if the Oprah/Tyler Perry-induced blitz surrounding the film will lead to a backlash.

The film received a 15 minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, not long after, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry signed on as executive producers.  The film was recently snubbed at the  Gotham Awards, leading some to wonder if that backlash is already happening.

Critics say such high-profile endorsements from Oprah and Tyler could kill the film's Oscar chances.  But, some say the controversy is just among film critics who are Oprah-haters and not from actual Oscar voters.  Some critics are upset the film has gone so mainstream.  Oprah even plans to do a week's worth of "Precious"-themed shows (now, that may be overkill).  Remember how hard she pushed "Beloved" and she gave a ringing endorsement to the snoozefest that was "Australia"?  Oprah was also a producer of "The Great Debaters"... another film snubbed at the Oscars. 

"Precious" opens November 6th.

Brew News: Tyler Perry's Serious Revelations (Just in Time for the Precious Premiere)

Filmmaker Tyler Perry, who is promoting a new movie about an abused teenager, has gone public with brutal memories of his own childhood beatings and molestation.
In an email to fans that has Perry's admirers buzzing, he recounts various examples of terrible childhood mistreatment - from his father beating him senseless to a neighbor woman molesting him at age 10.
Even his grandmother, the mother of his hated father, became a threat when she objected to his weekly allergy shot, he recalls. "Ain't nothing wrong with that damn boy - he just got germs on him. Stop wasting all that money," she said, he recalled. "She came and got me out of the living room leaving my Matchbox cars on the floor. She said she was going to kill these germs on me once and for all. She gave me a bath in ammonia."

Perry, 38, fled his abusive home in New Orleans and, after a period of homelessness and struggle, became a writer, director, actor and producer. He is now a mega-millionaire and one of the world's most influential black filmmakers. He is the producer of "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" on TV and his movies, including "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," "Madea's Family Reunion" and "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" have grossed $400 million. Along with Oprah Winfrey, he executive produced "Precious," the story of an illiterate obese teen mom struggling to rise above horrible sexual and mental abuse. The movie opens nationally Nov. 6.
Perry has made no secret of his unhappy childhood and speaks often of his abusive father, but the raw details in his email were new revelations. "I'm tired of holding this in. I don't know what to do with it anymore, so, I've decided to give some of it away," he wrote in Saturday's email, which was also posted on his website. He recounted being beaten by his father for reading books and filching cookies.

"He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord and trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back. To this day, I don't know what would make a person do something like that to a child," Perry wrote.

Without elaborating on what seems to be another molestation incident, he mentioned "a man that I knew from church when I was a kid" who had died broke and whose family asked Perry to pay for the funeral. "I quickly said no, but I wish I would have said yes. There is something so powerful to me in burying the man that molested me," Perry wrote. "I would have dug the grave myself." Perry said God sustained him, and provided comfort in his darkest times.

Terrie Williams, author of "Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting," praised Perry for sharing his old misery. "When someone like Tyler Perry posts this kind of personal message it helps to free others," Williams said. "People are suffering unspeakable, horrific horrors and they live with those secrets that tear them up inside," she said. "There are countless numbers of people who have been violated and haven't addressed their pain and that leads to depression, or self medicating, drinking, drug abuse, compulsive shopping when you don't have any money or eating disorders. Share your story to liberate yourself and get help."

Philly Kids Get To Play With The Mouse

The 65 Philadelphia-area kids who were too black to swim in a fancy pants swim club are going to Disney World, compliments of Madea's gun-toting arse.

Tyler Perry is sending the group to Disney World for three days. The kids were booted from the Valley Swim Club in Huntingdon Valley, PA last month.

Perry says he was so angered by the story, he decided to foot the bill for the excursion.

The camp is pursuing a civil rights law suit against the club.
