Brew Quotes: Jill Scott on Music

Our Jilly from Philly is back and about to flood the airwaves with some real music when her new album, “The Light of the Sun” drops this summer. She tells Vibe that she’s ready to hear some good music (aren’t we all?) and she’s getting uber-freaky on her new project. Reowr!

Making this album has been very freeing because I normally labor over what I say and how I say it. I think it could be the time in my life; it could be my son… I don’t know, but there are things coming out of my mouth. I’m like, Hey! There are some catch phrases that I know women and men are going to use. I like this energy. I’m on a little more rock this time. There is some swag up in there and some sensuality that even makes me blush.

VIBE: You started off as a poet in Philadelphia in the early ’90s and you’ve also dabbled in writing rhymes. Do you find yourself breaking into a spontaneous freestyle when you’re alone at the house?

We do freestyle in the studio. It’s not something I would share with everybody. Sometimes I come off the head. But I’m not an MC. I’m a poet and a vocalist. But I have to add that I’m ready to hear some real MCs. Please, I beg of you. Just say something, give me a story. It can’t all be about money and women. That’s why I love what Jay Electronica is doing. He is so fresh with the lyrics. He is the truth.

Amen to that. Erykah thinks he’s nice with it too. (LOL)

"Black Lily, Inc. is committed to supporting women artists of all ages, especially musicians and filmmakers, both emerging and established, by highlighting their work and providing opportunities for networking and training." Black Lily's site

But for now, I'm going to have a 5 Spot flashback, moment... and remember music when it was actually getting consistently good. WTF happened??

Will You Watch?: Jill Scott on Law & Order: SVU

Our favorite Jilly from Philly makes a guest appearance on tonight's episode of Law & Order: SVU with "The Blind Side's" Quinton Aaron.

Jill Scott plays the aunt of a former singer who suffers from multiple sclerosis and has been raped. Here's a little snippet...

Reowr!  An evil Jilly... I love it!

Jill says this about the role: "My character is not the victim, which I love. She's bitter and angry and conniving. I think she's very much alone and I like it."

Law & Order: SVU airs on NBC tonight at 10 pm (ET).

So, will you watch?

Brew Music: Vivian Green

Jill Scott's former background singer, the lovely Ms. Vivian Green is back! Her new album "Beautiful" will be released on April 6th.

I love Vivian, can't wait. I just hope it has a more happy- go- lucky feel to it unlike her 2nd album that was laden with a lot of "kneegrow you done done me wrong" tracks, eh! Forget them! let's just be happy!

Brew Bits: Jill Scott Talks Boobs, Bras & Lifetime Movies

Jill Scott is back! (And the church says...)

Jill popped over to the Chelsea Lately show to talk about her bra line with Ashley Stewart, her new son and her new Lifetime movie, "Sins of the Mother."  There's whole lotta "newness" going on with Miss Jilly, and I'm ready for it all.

"Sins of the Mother" airs on Lifetime, Sunday, February 21st at 8 pm (ET).  And, Jill's new album, The Light Of The Sun: Words and Sounds, Vol. 4, is due out in the Spring/Summer of this year.

And, while we're on the subject of Jill and all her newness... (geez, is this a publicity post?). Here's the full trailer for Jill's movie, "Why Did I Get Married, Too?" (due out April 2nd).  Cuz I don't feel like clicking and publishing a separate post for a Tyler Perry flick.  Lazy Saturdays at the Brew!

Brew Beauty: Jill Scott

Jill Scott is our latest Brew Beauty of the Week!  So who is Jill Scott?  She's the quintessential woman.  Jilly from Philly is smart, outspoken, part freaky (ya'll know she is), curvy and fabulous whether she's rocking a natural, locs, shaved head or a perm.  She is what other singers hope to be.  How many of us have cried, swayed, grooved or made love to her music?  Or, had light bulb moments after reading her poetry?  She's had ups and downs in love just like your best girlfriend, but she's always there.  Always putting a smile on your face, despite the madness.

Here's a look at the evolution of Jill over the years.

Jill Scott Now A Single Mom?

So, I’m trolling the Internetz at work as I often do (hey, don’t judge, I work hard) and I stumbled upon this article on the Essence website and nearly gasped. Ok, so I did gasp. Jill Scott is now a single mother! What? After all that hullabaloo about getting it on with her drummer after the her first failed marriage to that Lyzel in E Flat dude?

My favorite musical diva (and TV detective) tells Essence that being a mother to her 2 month old son, Jett, has been an exciting new experience for the 37 year old. Jill says she loved being pregnant (despite 36 hours of labor) and would even have another one.

Then, she drops the bomb… she and fiancé Lil' John Roberts are no longer together. Jill says she dealt with a lot of emotions, as expected when you’re hormonal and preggers, and thus, the relationship is over. Although she doesn't outright blame the break-up on the pregnancy. She says the two are co-parenting and working on being friends.

Mind you, Jill announced her engagement to Lil’ John (no, not the “What… Yeah” Lil’ John) during a concert in June of last year. John is/was her drummer. So she went from engaged in June ’08 to a mother in April ’09 and now single. Whew! I can’t keep up. Can anyone keep a man anymore? I sure can’t!

This proves life takes its twist and turns no matter how famous or how rich you are. Now, I don’t judge (I think we covered that already), but even though Jill can afford to raise this baby as a single mother, was this a well-thought-out move on her part? Did she just want to have a baby that bad and this guy was a means to that? Is it fair to the baby? So many questions, but what’s your call?

Perhaps, they’ll be re-thinking these matching tattoos?

On an up note, Jill says we may get a new CD this year.
