Man Down: Jayson Williams Sentenced to 5 Years......

After 8 years, Jayson was sentenced to 5 years for attempting to cover up the shooting of his then limousine driver, Chrisofi. The family asked for the maximum sentence.  Yikes!

NBA star Jayson Williams’ was sentenced for five tears on Tuesday for shooting of a limousine driver, Costas “Gus” Christofi eight years ago. Christofi was shot on Feb 14th 2002 at New Jersey home of the former NBA player. Williams will be serving a minimum of eighteen months sentence before he is granted parole.

In the 2004 trial Williams was convicted on four counts of covering up the shooting but was acquitted of aggravated manslaughter. In that session the jury had a deadlock on the reckless manslaughter count. However, this time to avoid a retrial Williams pleaded guilty.

Though he might turn tearfully to Andrea Adams, victim’s sister and apologize for his crimes and even to his family. Saying that he has failed them by not being a good father, husband, son and a brother, the letter of Adams was nothing short of not agreeing with the punishment received by Williams. Which was read by a court employee stating, “didn’t fit the crime” and the “agony of watching Jayson Williams prance around and live his life and acting like nothing happened.”

The former basketball player had been on bail since 2002 and has paid $2 million in 2003 to the Christofi family for settling of a wrongful death lawsuit. He was taken from the courtroom with handcuffs on, to serve his prison sentence from this Tuesday. But to the shame the jury once again did not reach consensus on reckless manslaughter which would have him sentenced for ten years.

.Williams has played in the NBA for nine years before retiring in 1999 when he injured himself and had to pull off from the NBA.
