Brew Bits: Walmart Racist Busted

New Jersey police have arrested a man in connection with Sunday's "all blacks" leave the store announcement at the Turnersville, NJ store.  So far, cops are being tight-lipped, only saying the unidentified man is from Atlantic County, NJ and was arrested Friday.

Walmart is reportedly working to limit access to the public address feature on their in-store telephones. I guess anybody can just pick up a phone up in there and start making announcements, huh?

More details about the arrest are expected to be released at a press conference today.

UPDATE: Turns out, the alleged culprit is a 16 year old boy. *smh*

Somebody At This Walmart Is Not Feeling The Coloreds

Walmart is investigating an incident at a store in Washington Township, NJ after someone got on the PA system and ordered black people to leave the store.

It happened Sunday night in the southern New Jersey Walmart. A male voice got on the overhead address system and “calmly” announced: "Attention Walmart customers: All black people leave the store now."

A manager jumped on the line and apologized for the announcement. It’s not clear just who made the announcement, a worker or a customer.  The corporate office calls the remark "unacceptable" and they’re looking into how it happened. Walmart has had a history of controversy when it comes to worker pay, women’s rights and some racist incidents, but the NAACP says the store is making strides in diversity.

I don’t know if I’m more shocked at the blatant racism or that people still shop at Walmart. #TeamTarget

Brew Bits: Racist Easter Eggs

A few wayward Easter eggs showed some Michigan kids just how disrespectful some people can be. Sunday, a few Black families in Auburn Hills, MI found plastic eggs stuffed with racist notes in their yards. The eggs had “N” word notes and references to the Aryan Nation inside them. One kid who opened one of the eggs thought they really came from the Easter bunny. Police are investigating the incident.

Sullying the name of Easter? White Jesus does not approve of this behavior!

Blatant Racism In Cleveland? You Decide...

A Black paper in Cleveland published this cartoon portraying State Senator Nina Turner as Aunt Jemima.  The Call & Post cartoon was featured with an editorial criticizing Turner for being the only Black leader to support the overhaul of county government.  Some in the Black community believe that overhaul will reduce their political power.  The newspaper says the editorial caricature is not harmful (or racist)... what's your call?  Can a Black newspaper be racist too?

KKK Rally? Is this 1920?

The KKK are rallying before the football game at Ole Miss today to protest the school chancellor's decision to keep the band from playing "From Dixie With Love." Today's game will be the first time in 20 years fans won't hear the medley which includes the Confederate fight song and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Historically, at the end of the tunes, fans shout "the South will rise again."

The University of Mississippi's chancellor is unhappy about that chant (duuh!). He says some who like the songs appear to want "a revival of segregation."

The KKK called the ban "an attack on our Southern heritage and culture."

Oh boy.  And we got a Black President?  Geez.

It’s 2010 not 1864.

Brew News: Brutal Belleville, IL School Bus Beating

Sooooo wrong, so disturbing. This is footage of the Black students from Belleville, IL beating up on a white student on their school bus.

A brutal school bus beating that police say may be racially motivated was caught on video and the footage is now circulating on the web. A white student at Belleville West High School was subjected to not one, but two vicious beatings by two of his African-American peers and the entire assault was captured on surveillance video.

The video begins with the Belleville West High School student, aged 17, trying to find a seat on the bus. Every time he tries to sit down he is deterred by other kids on the bus until the driver finally gives them no choice.

The white boy moves a bag off a seat and sits only to be brutally assaulted by two other students who were encouraged to escalate the attack by other kids on the bus. Based on the way the boy was treated leading up to the attack and the manner in which two African-American students ganged up on him police have suggested racism was a likely motivator.

Too Black To Swim?

Girard College has stepped in and saved the day for a group of African American and Latino children who were booted from a private suburban Philadelphia pool, presumably because of their race.

The group of about 65 campers from North Philly's Creative Steps Day Camp were scheduled to go swimming every Monday at the Valley Swim Club's private pool, a welcome change from the elementary school basement where they spend their days. The camp paid nearly $2000 for use of the private pool. This week marked their first foray to the pool.

One student said when the camp group arrived, he heard a white woman ask “what are all these black kids doing here?” In true 1952 fashion, when the black campers got in the pool, all the white kids got out. Workers at the pool asked the campers to leave and later promised to refund the camp’s money, leaving the camp to suspect race was at the center of its booting from the pool. Girard College has now offered the students use of its pool for the summer.

The president of the Valley Swim Club, John Duesler, said this in a statement: "There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club."

The club has since issued this statement on its
website:
The Valley Club is deeply troubled by the recent allegations of racism which are completely untrue. We had originally agreed to invite the camps to use our facility, knowing full well that the children from the camps were from multi-ethnic backgrounds. Unfortunately, we quickly learned that we underestimated the capacity of our facilities and realized that we could not accommodate the number of children from these camps. All funds were returned to the camps and we will re-evaluate the issue at a later date to determine whether it can be feasible in the future. Our Valley Club deplores discrimination in any form, as is evidenced by our multi-ethnic and diverse membership. Whatever comments may or may not have been made by an individual member is an opinion not shared by The Valley Club Board.
Still waiting on that apology...

Pennsylvania senator Arlen Specter wants the private pool to reinstate the campers immediately. The NAACP has asked the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission to launch an investigation of the club as well.
