Recession Proof Job #45: Amy Winehouse's Publicist

Just the thought of being Amy Winehouse's publicist makes me hurl hairballs. The troubled soul singer is reportedly due to spend New Year's Eve in a hospital following a lonely binge drinking episode. This is like the 50-11th time she's been in the hospital over some Brewshyt! Her very public battle with drugs has ensured her a suite equipped with a stomach pump that's surely seen a lot of work. I thought she was cleaning up a bit? And there's also word that she is ready to re-marry her ex-husband and resident street urchin Blake Civil-Fielder.

Just imagine how many calls her publicist gets each day from media and her pushers? Instead those inspiration posters with sayings such as  "Motivation" and "Drive"...that publicist has probably got "reaction to a prescription medication" or "exhustation" as running screen savers!

Another One Bites The Dust: Giant Mag Folds

Radio One’s Giant Magazine is folding…sorta.  Giant will stop printing and become a web-only publication.  Radio One bought the magazine two years ago for just $270,000.  The mag is aimed at 20-somethings (does this mean they don’t read or they’ve cut reading from the budget?  Justaskin…).  Anyway, the mag covers entertainment, celebs and fashion and has had (in my humble opinion) some of the flyest, most thinking-out-of-the-box covers.

You’ll be able to find Giant online at GIANTlife.com, a new Web site as part of its Interactive One division.  No word though on who’ll get the ax over at Giant.

Among their web ventures, Radio One also owns BlackPlanet (yo….that still exists?) and NewsOne.

Damn… times are tough!

Pampered...On A Budget

I'm all about getting more bang for your buck. I've actually been all about this even when we weren't in a recession...but I am NOT cheap! Just wanted to get that outta the way.

Anywho, just because we've got less money to throw around these days doesn't mean we should pamper ourselves any less.

I decided to put a little "me" time in my schedule and trekked to the Potomac Massage Training Institute in DC. It's a school for masseuses (the real kind...not the ones who send you penis texases, hoping for a happy ending). Since it's a massage school, you can make an appointment for a student massage for just 37 bucks! And you can't tip them since they're students. Ain't life grand?!

You get the same treatment you'd get at a professional spa (okay, there's no cucumber water but I hate that stuff anyway) but for a whole lot less. Student massages are $37, graduate massages (tipping optional) are $55 and professional massages (tipping also permitted but not expected) are $80...all well below a typical hour-long massage in this area!

Head to Google to find a massage training school near you. I swear, I love the innawebs.

Brew Health: How To Not Get Fat During A Recession

As times get tight, many of us are looking for ways to pinch pennies from every part of budgets.  That means, cutting back on lavish meals and organic produce and opting for processed or canned foods to save a few dimes.  Sadly though, the shortcuts mean Americans are getting fatter.

The Wall Street Journal reports double digit sales jumps in the sale of salty munchies like popcorn and cheese snacks. Potato chip sales could rise 22% this year as restaurant visits continue to fall.

So what does that mean for your waistline?  It means the obesity rate continues to climb!
Here are some tips to keep yourself in shape.

  1. Plan ahead: map out your meals for the week and stick to it!
  2. Make a list - check it twice: people who make lists are less inclined to shop impulsively
  3. Buy in bulk: it could save you 50%, just make sure you have a use for what you buy
  4. Cook: search online for fast, easy recipes and make them yourself to save money
  5. Pack your lunch: eat your leftovers for lunch to save money and avoid the vending machine
  6. Drink water: cut back on sugary drinks, add lime or a little True Lemon to jazz up your H2O
Of course, work out and all that stuff too.

Happy eating!

Halloween Idea: Be Facebook!

Hey, it's a recession but you still want to have fun this Halloween, right?  Why not dress as yourself, but in a quirky way.  Here's how to become your Facebook profile.

Create a poster or a box of your own Facebook profile.  Either do it by hand or blow up the actual image onto a poster.  Then, just wear it!  Easy enough.

For the really creative, cut out a space for your face to create a living Facebook profile.

Here are a few more ideas.

Don't forget to let people write on your wall.  You might want to avoid the poking though... freaks!
