Brew Bits: PETA Is Not Feeling Mike Tyson’s Pigeon Fest

PETA wants to go toe-to-toe with Mike Tyson of his new Animal Planet show, “Taking on Tyson” (tentative title).

PETA sent a letter to prosecutors in New York City asking them to investigate the show. They want prosecutors to look for illegal activity because “it is likely that extensive wagering will take place on the outcome of these races, as it customary in the industry” and PETA fears the birds may be treated cruelly.

In response to PETA’s feather-ruffling, Animal Planet says:
Regarding PETA’s latest allegations, I wanted to clarify that for Animal Planet’s Taking on Tyson show, there have never been any plans for wagering on the pigeon races. We have not yet begun filming but, rest assured, all of the pigeons that we will feature in the program are cherished and respected by their owners, including Mr. Tyson. Animal Planet will honor that respect and care in our production and in how these beautiful creatures are treated.

PETA stays on somebody’s tail feathers, huh?

From Pro to Broke

Gold diggers, step your game up! You’re running out of time. A new report from Yahoo! Sports suggests 80% of NFL players near bankruptcy 2 years after they retire from the game. 60% of NBA players go broke within 5 years of hanging up their shorts. And you can blame bad decision-making for their money woes.

According to the report, these are some of the biggest financial mistakes of all time:

Scottie Pippen
The former Bulls star lost $120 million in career earnings due to poor financial planning and bad business ideas, including blowing $4.3 million on a Gulfstream II corporate jet.

Evander Holyfield
The boxing champ raked in about $250 million during his career but made the very unwise decision to buy a $20 million house with 109 rooms. Now, he can’t afford heat.

Latrell Sprewell
Spree turned down a $21 million NBA contract because he couldn't feed his family off that *blank stare*, eventually, the government seized his yacht and his house went into foreclosure two years ago.  You mean the rim game wasn't profitable?

Mike Tyson
The ear muncher boxing champ blew his near $400 million fortune on a Bentley, a $2 million tub and some tigers. Tyson went bankrupt in 2003 but he went nuts circa 1990.

And what is the lesson we can learn from this? Don’t chase these dudes in the club, they have no money.

Mike Tyson Reps For The Pigeons

It’s not everyday that we can report Mike Tyson has a new job. Consider this one of those rare days...

Tyson is set to star in a new Animal Planet reality series about pigeon racing, tentatively called Taking on Tyson.  The former champ –who has raised pigeons since childhood– says "I feel a great pride acting as an official representative for all the pigeon fancier's out there.'' (now, re-read that with a lisp and then contain your laughter)

Tyson will co-executive produce the show, which will focus raising and racing pigeons, a largely unknown urban sport.

I'm happy to see him getting back on his feet. Taking on Tyson debuts in early 2011 on Animal Planet. So, will you watch?

Brew Funny: Mike Tyson on SNL

I'll admit, I'm usually pretty annoyed by Kenan Thompson's Saturday Night Live characters, but this here pseudo-BET spoof "What Up With That?" is pretty darn funny, thanks to the addition of Mike Tyson's dancing a jig at the end.

Oprah Apologizes to Robin Givens

Robin Givens got her pannies in a bunch when she saw Mike Tyson on the Oprah Winfrey show last month.  Givens was upset that Oprah didn't speak out against domestic violence when Tyson talked about beating her during their rocky marriage.

Givens is now a spokesperson for the National Domestic Violence Hotline.  She turned her rage into a letter to Oprah, asking Oprah why she let Mike Tyson talk about what he did to her and why the studio audience laughed as he did it.  (And they sure did laugh... I thought it was odd when I watched it)

Givens appeared on Oprah yesterday to talk about how she felt when Tyson told Oprah that he wanted to "sock her" after the couple's legendary interview with Barbara Walters.

Oprah told Robin:
“I don’t think that they were laughing at you, I think they were laughing at the term. In that moment, I will tell you, I felt that I should have said something. I felt that I should have said, ‘Audience, that isn’t funny…’ so I regret it. I would say to you and every woman, who has ever been hit, I feel that I did not handle that as well as I should have and I feel that I could have gone further and should have said more to clarify that what he was doing and what he was saying was wrong. So I apologize to you and I apologize to every woman who has ever been in that situation.”
Givens said, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I certainly appreciate what Robin's doing to shine a light on the ills of domestic violence, but I do wonder sometimes what else she has going on in her life.  It's like she's become the go-to person whenever the issue comes up.  What happened to her acting career?  #justsayin

Tyson and Holyfield Meet on Oprah

Mike Tyson was back on Oprah this morning for a live showdown with Evander Holyfield. Only, it wasn't much of a showdown.

Mutual praise and admiration dominated during the face to face meeting. The former friends haven't been on the best of terms since June 28, 1997, when Tyson chomped on Holyfield's ear like a piece of Church's chicken.

Today, Tyson shook Holyfield's hand and poured on the praise, calling Holyfield a "beautiful guy."

Holyfield admitted that he had bitten other people during childhood play-fighting as a way to get out of headlocks. Ewww!

Holyfield said one reason he wanted to appear with Tyson on television was to demonstrate to youth caught up in violence that reconciliation is always possible.

Aww, Rodney King!  We can all get along!

Will You Watch?: Mike Tyson on Oprah

Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson is talking to Oprah this Monday.  In a taped interview, Tyson tells Oprah about how he's been coping with the tragic death of his 4-year-old daughter Exodus.  She died after becoming tangled in a treadmill cord.

Tyson told Oprah that he does not even know all of the details surrounding his daughter's death and he really doesn't want to because "then there might be a blame for it. And if there's somebody to blame for it, there will be a problem."

So, will you watch?
